John A. Day was born and raised in Wisconsin.  He graduated from the University of Wisconsin -Platteville  with a Comprehensive Business and Economics degree, receiving one of two "Outstanding Senior" awards at graduation.  He graduated with honors from the University of North Carolina School of Law in 1981, was a member of the North Carolina Law Review, and was elected to the Order of the Coif.. He has practiced civil litigation in Nashville and Tennessee for over 26 years.

John has served as President of the Tennessee Trial Lawyers Association (now the Tennessee Association for Justice) and Chair of the Council of State Presidents of the American Association for Justice (formerly the Association of Trial Lawyers of America). John also serves on the boards of the Tennessee Association for Justice and  Lawyers Involved for Tennessee, and has served on the boards of the Southern Trial Lawyers Association and the Tennessee Justice Center, a not-for-profit law firm that advocates for Tennessee's poor, particularly on healthcare-related issues.  He is the current Chair of the Tort and Insurance Practice section of the Tennessee Bar Association.

John was inducted into the American College of Trial Lawyers at the age of 45, and has been listed in Best Lawyers in America since 1993 at the age of 37. The most recent edition of Best Lawyers in America has John listed in five catergories:  Bet-the-Company, Personal Injury, Products Liability, Medical Malpractice and Commerical Litigation. John is routinely included in "Best Lawyer" lists in Nashville and Tennessee and has been included in the last two editions of "Mid-South Super Lawyers."

Along with Donald Capparella and John Wood, John is the author of Tennessee Law of Comparative Fault and serves as the Founder and Editor of the Tennessee Tort Law Letter, a monthly newsletter about recent developments in Tennessee tort law.

John previously served as the President of the National Board of Trial Advocacy, and has been board-certified in civil trials for over a decade. He is the Past Chair of  the Tennessee Supreme Court's Commission on Continuing Legal Education and Specialization and currently serves as a Consultant to the Tennessee Judicial Conference's Pattern Jury Instruction (Civil) Committee. He has previously served on the Court's Alternative Dispute Resolution Commission and, beginning January 1, 2008, will serve on the Court's Commission on the Rules of Practice and Procedure.

In 2006 John was elected to membership in the American Law Institute, the organization that promulgates the Restatements of the law.  He currently serves on the Members Consultative Group for two Restatement Third of the Law of Torts projects.

John has spoken at over 250 seminar programs in over fifteen states.  He has written over thiry articles in peer-reviewed publications.

John has been actively involved in these activities for over two decades to serve the profession and to keep his knowledge level and skills at a level that will best serve the firm's clients. 

John is married to Joy Burns Day, a lawyer in Franklin, Tennessee.  John has two children from a previous marriage, Sarah and Michael, and Joy and John have a daughter (Kate) born in August, 2007.   John enjoys hiking, water sports, and politics.
